Keeping in mind that we all have different bodies, here is my take:

  1. I used a CB3000 with a standard base ring and felt it was barely too large. The 1 3/4” option on the CB3K was quite snug, so when I ordered my jailbird, I split the difference by choosing a 1 13/16” ring. That one was also just slightly tight, leading me to switch back to the 1 7/8”, which works well.
  2. The oval shape can be more comfortable and isn’t just marketing hype. Since the cage’s center sits above the base ring’s center, it provides a more uniform gap along the sides for a closer fit. In my case, this doesn’t change the overall volume; if you use a 1 3/4” round ring, a 1 3/4” oval will suit you just as well. It also lowers the top-to-bottom height, adding to stability. The upside is that changing the MM ring diameter is straightforward for him. But definitely send him an email with any questions—he’s very helpful.

If you decide on an oval, stick to the same size. The surface area is identical; it just fills that space differently. I tried the oval shape but found it didn't suit me. After about 20 minutes, I started noticing discoloration. I tested a larger size next time, but then everything shifted forward and felt too loose. In the end, I went with a round ring of the same size as my previous oval and have had no issues. My low hang might be why this works for me. If you are high-and-tight, though, an oval could offer more comfort.
