So what do folks actually make of this?

I brought it up with LRC and she feels it wouldn't put her off entirely, but might get a bit dull. To quote her: "Once you've spotted one cock in the cage, what's really different? The cages shift around, but that tiny glimpse of the cock doesn't do much for me."

Polls can be both useful and entertaining, yet when we're trying to gauge what someone else might think... I get the sense that "inaccurate" is almost an understatement. It's hard for me to even try guessing what activates or deactivates a specific slice of a small group of people. Perhaps I'm overthinking it. I noticed quite a few avatars shifting during the first thread on this topic. While I agree we should probably be more "key-holder friendly," I don't believe that needs to go through a poll or vote. If the owner, or mods, feel the forum would offend fewer visitors by altering what's permitted in avatar pictures, they could just establish it as a rule. No matter how you slice it, someone will always disagree or be dissatisfied. Might as well get it sorted quickly. These are simply my thoughts, though I decided not to cast a vote.

I believe we are too open-minded to enforce strict rules. If something was genuinely offensive, it would likely lead to requests for the user to change it. Only the site owner has the power to make a rule; moderators cannot do so independently. That decision rests with Thumper. It's not inaccurate because people have a clear choice of yes or no, rather than maybe—that would be inaccurate. Remember what the question was asking. Also, as you pointed out, they aren't forced to vote.

I really like Thumper's rule for the Forum: "Don't be a dick." I think that covers it nicely, IMO.:)

The moment you begin drawing distinctions, it becomes a slippery slope. That said, I understand your perspective. If an avatar picture were larger than a postage stamp, perhaps it would be less intrusive.
