Chafing or pinching issues caused by a two-piece ring

I had to step away for a bit, which is unfortunate since my partner was really starting to enjoy the chastity lifestyle. We picked up a Steelworxx Steelheart that comes with two types of split rings in it. I believe the gap in the ring is leading to pinching rather than rubbing. During the middle of my second night out, I needed someone to hold the key because there was an irritated spot on my scrotum exactly where the metal split was located.

We are planning to get a standard solid ring or maybe one with anatomical shaping so we can test it again. Also, how much does shaving matter for comfort?
