I’ve been wearing my JB for a couple of days now. Overall I’m pleased, but there’s one issue. The base ring spins while it’s on me, so the lock ends up at either the 3 or 9 o’clock position. The padlock also has some play in it (though not too much). These two issues have caused the ball to pop out occasionally. It hasn’t been terribly painful, but it’s annoying when I’m out and about, and obviously means my JB isn’t as secure as it could be. Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you fix it?
Round ring or oval? I'd say an oval ring would help reduce the rotation. The play in the lock might mean you need a slightly larger one... are you using the Master Lock? I'm not an expert, but that could be the solution? Also what size gap do you have? Perhaps you need a tighter gap? Or maybe a slightly smaller ring; is it very easy to slip one finger under to the first knuckle?
Thanks for the reply Lady. It's an oval ring with a non-MM supplied lock. I think I might need a smaller ring too because when I have the cage off (but the ring on) I can fit two fingers underneath. I used the CB6000 rings as a guide based from MM advice, but since metal rings are more comfortable than the knock-off CB rings I'm used to, I guess I actually need to go smaller.
Yeah I'd recommend going at least one size down if you can fit two fingers under. That could be the main issue. The smaller lock will cause less jiggle in the cage; that's fixed by using the right size (does anyone remember the exact lock size? I forget) or adding a security screw. Also, if you used knock-off rings before, the smoother steel ones might fit differently because they are rounded and oval shapes tend to sit closer to the body at the base of the shaft (**for some).
Time to order a new ring I think. Although I just got an email from MM; turns out my sizing was wrong. The cage should be snug diameter-wise. Mine has a bit of room for expansion.
