Running a marathon typically means your feet will hit the ground between 30,000 and 40,000 times. Unless you have unusually fluid mechanics, that translates to roughly 30k–40k cycles of your JB moving up and down, with the exact travel distance varying based on how you run. It’s pretty obvious once you think about it.:)
I’ve experimented with using a supportive belt during basketball games, which works quite well by definitely restricting downward movement. For a marathon, that belt comfort would be crucial to prevent chafing and similar irritations. During training phases, you might get away with a belt featuring releasable clips on both ends so it can be put in or taken out without requiring your wife’s help.
When I trail run, I use an Under Armour baseball-style jock strap (it has a cup but mine doesn't use it). The material is soft enough that I can comfortably wear my heavier Looker 03 without any issues. It also stops the hasp from clicking against the cage bars. Even with all the bouncing over rocks and roots, it holds up well. My runs have only been around 5k so far, but it’s a solid option.
...and wearing running tights without shorts over them is probably not ideal.
As you train for a marathon and gradually extend your long run distances, it will be the perfect chance to see how things hold up. Regardless of how well training goes, I believe you should get permission to skip wearing it on race day. You’re putting in significant effort—blood, sweat, and tears—to prepare for the marathon, so having discomfort from a chastity device at mile 19 that forces you to quit would be frustrating. Furthermore, once your long runs extend past about 12 miles, I think you should also be allowed out of the cage during those training sessions.
I’m picturing lube applied around the base ring, paired with suitable jock-style underwear and loose running shorts?
