Questions about the base ring

I’m just starting out and won’t even get into my first device until this Saturday (assuming my wife says yes). So I might not have the full picture yet. But forcing myself through a tiny hole, with all those suggestions involving string, lubricant, and a heavy rubber mallet… it doesn’t sound enjoyable to me.

Has any manufacturer thought about constructing the device in two halves that join together via a pin inserted into holes at each end? If they use very precise machining tolerances, there would be no gap. Then you’d secure them with tiny screws—and have the cage itself connect so that what truly holds everything together is the cage structure, not just the screws.

I believe A. L. Enterprises now offers a system featuring a tri-partite ring in the way you suggest, specifically for their CB-xxxx line of devices. There are also some models that utilize hinged rings, which I am sure you have noticed from several recent discussions. Obviously, the issue with a solid ring is that if it is large enough to get over your junk initially, then it can just as easily slip back off. This isn't a problem for everyone, but it might be for some.
