Angie, Kate, and Emma were seated together on a blanket beneath the shade of a tree in the campus quad. Around them, dozens of students mingled—grabbing lunch, enjoying their break, or rushing to class. Aside from variations in hair and color, these three college girls looked nearly identical in their athletic-department-approved white tennis ensembles. They wore sleeveless tops bearing the school crest paired with matching short skirts edged in gray and blue. Their impossibly toned, deeply tanned legs emerged from beneath the hems, ending in bare feet with toes that wiggled freely. Stacks of tennis gear and bags rested beside them as they waited for practice to start.
Each girl was just like every other student: absorbed by her phone. Angie and Kate kept stealing glances at one another’s screens, giggling and pointing toward various spots across campus.
Emma noticed the behavior and asked, “What are you two looking at?”
They giggled again in unison. “Lockbook,” they replied together.
Emma rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Can’t you ever think about anything else?”
Angie and Kate exchanged looks before answering simultaneously: “No!” They burst into laughter, returning to their respective screens.
A boy was making his way along the nearby sidewalk.
Angie nudged Kate toward him; both girls turned back to their phones.
“Aww, he’s already spoken for,” Angie said.
“What is he wearing?” asked Kate.
Angie leaned closer at her screen. “Cobra, CTX…small!”
Both girls laughed loudly as the boy passed by. He glanced over at them with a knowing yet shy expression before looking away. Emma caught this and chided her friends: “Be nice…”
As the boy moved out of earshot, Kate asked, “Who’s his holder?”
“Some bitch named Lois; I don’t know her,” Angie said. “She looks old. She might actually be his mother!”
“That’s too bad,” Kate replied. “I’d like to see what’s going on in there.”
“You go right ahead—you know the rules. You can make him show you, as long as he stays locked up. Just no touching without her approval,” Angie said.
“I get it, I get it. Maybe next time,” Kate said.
“Let’s see what else is out there,” Angie added.
Angie and Kate focused on their phones again, pointing them toward the boys walking or sitting nearby.
“Locked, locked, locked…locked.”
“They’re all locked, of course,” Emma said. “They have to be. You know that.”
“We do know that,” Kate replied. “I just meant they each had a key holder, duh.”
“Oh,” Emma responded.
Emma—the youngest of the trio—paused in thought for a moment. “Can you imagine what it must have been like before the Lock laws were passed? With all these guys walking around with their dicks swinging back and forth freely, acting as if they owned the world.”
“Disgusting,” Angie said.
“I can’t even picture it,” Kate added.
“You know,” Emma continued, “my great gamma told me stories about that earlier time. She said history books don’t tell the whole truth.”
“No? Then what really happened?” Kate asked, nudging Angie’s knee.
“She mentioned around 2019 there was a virus that made everyone ill and even killed quite a few people. The government rushed out vaccines to the public and forced everyone to take them, whether they wanted to or not…”
“So? That’s what the books say,” Angie replied.
“I know,” Emma said. “What they don’t mention is that there was a group of women secretly in charge of the new administration. They altered the mandatory boosters so they contained something special that made males more docile and susceptible to suggestion.”
“That sounds crazy,” Angie remarked.
“Does it?” Emma countered. “Right after the mandatory boosters were delivered, those same women moved against the sitting President and had him declared unfit. Once he was removed from office, another woman—I can’t recall her name—became president. She immediately enacted all these anti-male executive orders left and right; dozens of them. Since the government was largely run by the same party and men were considered useless, no one blocked any of it. I believe her first order required all males to wear a government-issued chastity device once they turned 13. Shortly after that came the chastity registry, and eventually all devices became internet-enabled and trackable via the LockBook app—where we are today. Now we can check the lock status of any male at will.”
“Exactly how it should be,” Angie said.
“You know it, girl,” Kate agreed. “Eww, look! That guy over there is locked by his sister!”
Emma shook her head and returned to reading. “You guys are hopeless.”
