Are hinged designs more reliable than solid ones?

My Vice features a hinge ring that wraps around my shaft, making it impossible to simply pull off. This raises the question: what is the purpose of a solid ring? If you can slip one over your cock, surely it could be pulled right off. It seems like a hinged design offers better security since you can’t just yank it away; you have to unlock and remove the pin holding the ring closed.
