How can I reduce the size of my ring?

I’m struggling to keep my current metal ring on; I’ve ordered the next size down, which is 5 mm smaller. Is that a significant change? Since even 1 mm can matter, I’m worried about this drop. How have you reduced your metal ring’s diameter? Did you use medical tape, electrical tape, or plastic tubing?
