I’ve been using the JailBird for a few months. I experienced significant burning at the ring’s base, so after experimenting with lubricants, I decided to inspect the build quality since an insufficient gap had been suggested as the culprit.
My setup features an oval ring with a 3/8” gap.
As someone in engineering, I prefer literal interpretations and noticed that the gap isn’t actually 3/8” if you measure it as the shortest distance between surfaces. Using vernier calipers, I determined the space between the cage edges and the ring ranged from 14mm on the sides down to 12mm at the bottom (apologies for the imperial conversion struggle; 3/8” is roughly 9.5mm, while 12mm is close to 1/2”).
However, if you measure along the line of the post, the gap really is 3/8”, which I believe matches MM’s standard.
I resolved the discrepancy between the side gaps and the base by carefully using a vice and hammer. I protected the steel with masking tape and slightly bent the post relative to the ring. The result? A consistent 14mm gap all around (by my measurement), and the burning is gone. BUT Since leveling out the gap, my left testicle—the smaller one—has escaped three times. Fortunately, it wasn’t terribly painful, though I wouldn’t mind avoiding it! Prior to this modification, I had one escape that was excruciating.
So now I’m torn. Narrowing the gap might restore the burning sensation, but currently, I risk a partial escape.
Note that the device remains secure; while I could theoretically withdraw from it, refitting would be quite hard. The right testicle definitely stays put, and since my chastity is voluntary rather than enforced (except by My Lady’s desire), this works for me.
