I recently picked up a stainless steel device with a hinged base ring, and I’m somewhat regretting that it wasn’t solid. The hinge itself is clearly uncomfortable; a popular fix seems to be covering the hinge with surgical tubing. My unit came with a 1” length, so I gave it a try. It was decent at first, but the tubing started stretching and deforming fairly quickly. Now it’s stretched out enough that it won’t stay put over the hinge, causing my skin to catch on its edges. Plus, when the hinge closes, it catches hair if I haven’t shaved completely smooth.
I posted about this in another thread: the archived discussion
One plan of action is replacing the surgical tubing once mine arrives. I’m swapping out that 1” piece for enough tubing to encircle the entire ring. This prevents sliding away from the hinge and stops my skin from getting caught on both edges simultaneously. The new tubing has a wall thickness of 1/32” (compared to the original 1/16”), so it shouldn’t alter the base ring size much.
Does anyone else have tips for making hinged base rings more comfortable? Or should I just quit and try a different device? What about welding the stainless steel ring shut permanently?
