Apologies for the lengthy message; I’ve been wanting to ask this question for a very long time, and this feels like the right spot to gather some perspectives. Not entirely sure how applicable my situation is, but providing some background might shed light on what I’m asking.
I have been married for over two decades to my wonderful wife and soulmate. Professionally, I am self-employed and manage a business with numerous staff members. This role demands that I take charge and handle various scenarios and challenges. Meanwhile, she works as an executive at her company, constantly climbing the ladder and emerging as a rising star. She is exceptionally intelligent and driven. More assertive by nature and a natural leader, while I am more relaxed; this balance has always served us well. Over recent years, we have begun exploring bedroom BDSM, with me consistently taking on the dominant role. We are deeply in love, which significantly enhances our shared happiness. We practically do everything together.
As far back as I can recall (likely around age 12 or 13), I have harbored a fantasy of being in a female-led relationship. As I matured, I realized this appeal wasn’t immediately obvious to most women and haven’t discussed it with anyone throughout my entire life. For just about the whole duration of our marriage, I have imagined my wife holding the reins over our dynamic.
Now that I am approaching 50, I want to explore this aspect of myself alongside her. I’ve shied away from having this conversation several times in recent years. It will likely come as a considerable surprise to her, though anything is possible. I believe there is some biological basis for these tendencies in men and women. My deep-seated fear is that revealing my desire might diminish her attraction to me as a man. I wonder if being somewhat selfish by bringing this up is justified when I have such an ideal partner and relationship. Our marriage has been fantastic for 20 years, and the last thing I want is to disrupt it in any way. It feels like an easy out to simply state my feelings and assume that if she loves me, she will accept them.
I understand this desire is more common among men than women. So here is my question: If you were with a man for 20 years in a great relationship, would you be open to suddenly hearing he wants a female-led dynamic? Would your immediate thought be, ‘You’ve held it together so long; why rock the boat now?’ Am I being short-sighted and risking something that isn’t broken for a fantasy? Can a woman married to a man who has become submissive remain truly happy in this type of relationship over the long term?
Sorry again for the length; this topic has been brewing for years. I appreciate any feedback, thank you!
