My spouse and I view finances quite differently. She tends to save every penny, while I am happy spending if it buys me time or convenience. Because of this, she has built up savings, whereas despite earning well, I let my unnecessary debt climb to roughly £10,000.
Two months back, we decided I would hand over control of our accounts and receive an allowance in return. We both expected that with her managing things, the debt issue would resolve quickly – and today it did. By giving her veto power over every expense (with only a minor exception for my personal allowance), she has completely cleared me.
I feel deeply grateful to her for this help. We are both in much better shape now (the original goal was to position ourselves well for purchasing property).
Once we established the system and made it difficult for me to access funds outside of my allowance, it worked brilliantly. It serves as a strong control mechanism for her, ensuring I complete chores and follow orders, while also solving the spending habits that were holding us back from buying our home.
This marks a significant win for our FLR. I doubt she will return my credit cards anytime soon.:)
