Alright, I’ve brought it up a few times before that I’m currently sporting the [[A272 stainless steel cage]]( Throughout the New England winter, it’s been hands down the most comfortable and secure option for me, likely even surpassing my heavily modified CB3000. One problem with a tight tube is that your penis gets tugged around all day. Without enough lubrication inside, it can settle into an awkward position that makes peeing tricky, particularly at urinals (I struggle to get a finger through the cage opening to fix it). I’ve experimented with various lotions over time, but this year I focused on oils. The ones I kept are JO silicone lube for its long-lasting power and coconut oil, which is natural even if it doesn’t last as long. My main complaint with oils has always been that they trap sweat, dirt, dead skin, and urine, leading to odor. The A272 (seriously, could they have chosen a better name?) features a very tight tube—33mm, which is narrower than the 35mm narrow size of the CB3000/6000. Without a “head” on the device, it fits snugly all the way down with little room to clean effectively. I found silicone lube difficult to wash out, and even coconut oil stayed trapped in the tube; despite scrubbing thoroughly in the shower every night, there was still some funk lingering by week’s end when I took it off for a two-minute deep clean. “Smells like feet,” Mrs Edge once remarked. So, just because I could, I switched back to lotion. My go-to is usually Gold Bond or something similar; they tend to be thicker. I’ve used the Shea butter version before, but since Mrs Edge disliked that scent, I tried their mildly scented Healing with Aloe formula. Each morning, I apply a small amount inside the tube with a Q-tip and spread some around the cuff ring. Despite being thicker, lotion is much easier to rinse out. Since I shower at night, it clears from the cage without trouble. I’ve been using this method for four or five weeks now, and I’d argue you barely need to take the device off for that weekly scrub; I haven’t noticed any bad smells. We even skipped a week recently with no problems. I know the trade-off is that lotion doesn’t last as long during the day when you need lubrication around the ring—it often wears off by lunch and needs reapplication. I haven’t tried putting oil outside while keeping lotion inside because it goes against my desire for convenience so far, though the small amount left at the end of the workday works fine; I just adjust things slightly more. Anyway, since this question pops up occasionally, I return to my stance from 15 years ago: lotion is likely the superior choice for most tube-style devices.
