Alright… So my young guy had a bit of an ego surge yesterday. It was such a minor thing, but it got under my skin and made me feel kind of insignificant. Basically, he found it really funny that I’d mixed up an HDMI cable with an ethernet one—a mistake in my own eyes. It didn’t matter much at all. But his laughter (which felt excessive) seemed like a move to seize control. An attempt to intentionally steer the situation and suggest he knows better than me. (He does, obviously, when it comes to gaming consoles). I’m not someone who needs to boss people around constantly. I don’t have to be right all the time and can easily accept learning from my mistakes. So again, his reaction didn’t make sense to me, nor did mine. Am I overanalyzing this? Right now, I can’t really punish him (we won’t get that chance until April) and even then, our relationship isn’t quite at the stage where punishment is standard yet. I feel like he should be supporting me, handling those pesky cables himself without needing to prove a point. More importantly, he shouldn’t be trying to one-up me. Or perhaps he just genuinely found it amusing??
