My spouse and I have just relocated to a new home, leaving us with an extra bedroom that we’re keen on converting into a play area. There are several choices for me to consider here. The specific options are listed in the poll above, and I’m looking forward to hearing what others think. I’ve also laid out my thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of each choice.

Note: We aren’t trying to overhaul our entire lifestyle; functionality is key since it needs to serve as both a playroom and a guest bedroom (IE we have friends and family who shouldn’t know about our private life). If I were to create the ultimate playroom that would always remain one, I’d opt for full armoire or cabinet storage, standard closets, plus a dresser for underwear and clothes that don’t need hanging. It would also be painted with other feminine/sissy touches. However, since I want to keep things as they are now while maintaining this dual-purpose room:

Option 1: Custom Closet Shelving with High Rod This is my favorite because it keeps EVERYTHING inside the closet. Plus, it’s budget-friendly—I only need to purchase a rod and two or three boards that I can cut to size using a circular saw. The main drawback is placing the rod quite high up in the closet. Since our ceiling height is eight feet, there’s plenty of room vertically. Considering dresses typically measure around 45-50 inches long, they’ll either barely touch the top shelf or gather on it if placed at about forty inches from the floor (rendering the upper part unusable). This setup offers roughly fifty inches of usable space from the floor to where garments end when positioned at the very top. I can manage this by using a curved pole similar to those found in department stores, allowing me to shut and lock away unwanted visitors.

Option 2: Dresser within Closet with Rod Similar to Option 1 but costs more due to purchasing a dresser instead of building shelves. However, it provides better storage for toys etc.

Option 3: Regular closet combined with armoire/cabinet Provides full hanging space (or two if adding extra rods) and keeps toy storage outside the closet via an armoire which is lockable too! Downside? Decent armoires on Craigslist cost between $100-$200—a bit steep compared to DIY shelving.

Option 4: Clothing stored downstairs/Storage in Closet Great for maximizing storage space but requires going down into the basement for clothes; I’d rather avoid keeping all that stuff there. Feel free share any additional recommendations! As someone who loves organization, simple solutions like “throw toys in a box” won’t cut it:P
