A few years back, Ms Val and I went car shopping with me as the buyer. The salesperson kept asking me what kind of vehicle I wanted. Ms Val was getting frustrated because it was her call to buy a new one for me. She finally ordered me to shut up or she would make me sit in the waiting car until she returned, right there in front of the salesman. After picking out the car we went to the desk where she began negotiating. I chimed in and she quickly told me to stay seated and only talk when addressed. The salesman just smirked.
When she settled on a deal, she asked, “What do you have to say?” Thank you, Ma’am. Later as we signed the documents, again I was instructed to remain silent. She said this in front of the finance manager. It was fortunate that she bought me a car and let my name appear on the papers alongside hers. I felt humiliated and started to speak up, but she simply told me to sign and wait outside in the vehicle, adding that we would discuss what silence means later tonight. The lady laughed as I left her office.
That evening Ms Val made me wash out with soap. She had me stand in my corner for an hour holding a bar of soap between my teeth. It taught me well about not speaking without permission.
