Men on this board assume authority arrives at about forty five, with a house and a career behind it. Mine arrived at twenty and has been the organising fact of every relationship I have had since. What that means in practice is that half the men who write to me are working out how to be led by somebody younger, out loud, in the messages, at length, and I am not the right audience for that particular process.
Twenty eight, Brooklyn, I manage a veterinary clinic, eight years of leading, two relationships and the longer of them four years with a man twelve years older than me.
That one worked and I know exactly why. He never once made my age a topic. Not as a compliment, not as a worry, not as a joke at somebody's dinner table. It simply was not a thing we discussed, and the absence of that conversation left room for everything else we might have talked about instead.
What I run is domestic and unglamorous. I decide how the week goes, I set standards about the parts of his life he has let slide, and I check them. I am not interested in being called anything in particular and I do not perform.
Not looking for a man who wants to tell me how mature I am, which is meant well and lands badly every time. Not looking to be anybody's second youth. Not looking for somebody who will have to explain me to his friends, because if that conversation is coming he should have it before writing rather than in month six.
Answering a post like this one
Most people reading a post like this one are deciding whether to write to her, and then writing something forgettable. These three are about the message itself, and about knowing who is on the other end of it.
